Healthy Eating Challenge – Week 5

Week 5 has been a bounce-back week for me.  I am down one pound for a grand total of 5 (again!).  I’ll take it.  Keep picturing what one pound of butter looks like in the grocery store and, hey, I’ll take it.

The last month-and-a-bit have been interesting research for me, figuring out what triggers a cracker-binge and what I need to do to avoid those.  Here’s two-cents worth of helpful advice:

Only splurge when it’s really, REALLY worth it.

That sounds simple…but I’ve found it to be a handy tool when I’m faced with an opportunity to eat something that’s…errr…. not exactly healthy.

For example:

  • Open cupboard and find box of Wheat Thins.  Should I eat that?  HECK NO.  These are probably my least fave of all salty snacks.  Chemicals laden cardboard squares with salt that market themselves as ‘healthy’ by throwing the words “Wheat” and ‘Baked” on the box.  Totally NOT binge-worthy.  If I eat that I will feel guilty and crave more junk in an hour.
  • Open the fridge and find slice of home made strawberry pie with dollop of home made whipped cream?  HECK YES.  Totally worth it.  No chemicals, farm fresh berries (from right across the road!) and a treat that only presents itself once a year! (In strawberry season…when they are sweeter and juicier than you could ever imagine). That, my friends, is a worthy indulgence.

So one week left in the healthy eating challenge.  And it’s strawberry season.  Wish me luck!

6 Week Clean Eating ChallengeLooks like I have survived the first week of my healthy eating, blood-sugar lowering, fat-burning challenge.  And (holy-big-smiles Batman), the results are in:  This week I am down 3.5 pounds!  (Insert cheers and applause here).

I will come clean by admitting I wasn’t totally perfect… I ate some Zesty cheese Doritos.  On Friday night my wonderful hubby rented movies and brought me Doritos to go with.  He even wrote me a love note on the bag – how can a girl resist?   I explained very lovingly about the healthy eating challenge and put the deadly Doritos away in a closet.  Then I could think of NOTHING else but those darn crispy bits of goodness beckoning me.  Taunting me.  Calling me name.  So I caved in and had some.  Not all of them – but some. My husband made me promise I would come clean on the blog and own up to it.  So here I am admitting it – but it’s also an important lesson: I can not have Doritos in this house or I will eat them.

Now onto the GOOD news:  I forgave myself and carried on with the clean eating challenge.  Overall, the week was still a huge success.  Even during an all-day soccer tournament where burgers and dogs, pizza and Timbits were sold.  Even when my father-in-law took us all out to dinner.  I have been eating clean, guzzling green smoothies and noshing organic plant-based foods all week long.

And here are the bonuses that go along with pounds lost and blood sugar lowered:

BONUS #1:  I have been sleeping like a log!  Seriously, by about the third day I was starting to have deep, drooling sleeps.  No longer waking every night at 3am and doing client-work in my head all night long!

BONUS #2: My tummy feels so good.  I didn’t realize before that my tummy felt bad – but – around day 5 my gut started to do a happy dance and I literally feel better than I have in years!

So with 3.5 pounds lost, awesome sleep and a yummy tummy, I am PUMPED for week 2.  And remember if you want to join in it’s not too late.  You can get on board with a ‘5 week clean eating challenge’ and share your results in the comments each week.  It helps immensely to have some accountability.
